Kumon Awards Ceremony

Today was the 2008 Kumon Annual Awards Ceremony. And I received Advanced Student Honor Roll Awards for both Math & Reading from the Former Mayor of Cupertino, Kris Wang. Trophies as award is not all..for my parents bought me a remote control truck as a reward. Can this day be any better!

  2. This is in response to the request of a fellow blogger who wants to remain anonymous:
The request is to put forth my opinion about Kumon. So here it is:

Kumon adopts a learn by rote method. Meaning, the kids learn a concept just by doing it over and over and over until they gain speed and accuracy. You cant expect much one on one tutoring or focusing on the concept etc.

Some people like learn by rote some dont. I dont. But the reason I include Kumon into
Karthik's agenda is mainly to improve his speed and accuracy. Personally, I wouldnt
be for Kumon if I were to employ just Kumon as my primary teaching source. I compliment it with my way of introducing any new concept before he does it the kumon way.

One advantage of Kumon is it builds the test taking ability in kids early on. So I would say go for Kumon if you have the extra time and energy to sit with ur kid every day to get the work done and besides help him get the basics down. Once they take even a 5 day vacation from their kumon practice, you can see their speed decline exponentially! I am going through such a phase now and the pending works just pile up.

So Kumon has its pros and cons like any entity in this world - that you have to analyse before you take a leap.

Hope it is as clear as mud now. ;)

    Happy teaching!
