Find Mr.X - a math game

It has been a while that mom and me engaged in active homeschooling. But Today during lunch, we played this interesting game Mom invented to refine my arithmetic understanding. I named the game "Find Mr.X". We picked up 12 lego blocks and I divided them into 2 parts 7 and 5 each. Mom will randomly take away some 'X' number of blocks from any of the group and I have to guess Mr.X. I scored all the time. Mom is as always very proud of me. Mom says, it will make me 'see' Math than simply doing it by theory.

    Hi Thenu,
    Your site is really wonderful.
The way you spend time with your kid makes me feel jealous.Lucky kid.
I saw your sketches, they too are good, particularly I liked the baby who was crying. The innocence on the baby's face is very difficult to get.You have got it perfectly. I used to do some sketches.
I also have a kid 7 years old. I have a question for you, my kid is very much hyper active in the evenings, I have to cook and my husband comes home and we try to have dinner. But he is too hyper active, jumps on the sofa , runs all over the house, keeps shouting.
Do you have any idea how I can engage him? If so pls let me know.
Anyway your site was really superb.
    take care

  2. Hi Meena,

Thanks for your compliments. :) I very much like to see your sketches too. Do you have a blog or site to post your pictures?
Your son seems to be more active. :) As for the tips to calm him down, I am no expert but I have couple of things to share. The sugar intake or any additives or preservatives (like the ones found in colored candies etc) considerably makes some kids hyperactive. If he is taking artificially colored snacks / sweets/ candies, Cutting them down may be helpful. The other thing is: Establishing regular routines can help him.Children of all types tend to have difficulty transitioning when routines are not clear and consistent. If a child knows that reading time or homework time is at 6:00 pm, then he or she will naturally fall into the pattern of getting his work done at that time. If homework time is “anytime” then the child suffers from lack of routine, and will act up accordingly. Give him lots of hands on activity like crafting or anything of his interest to keep him engaged when you find him acting up. Even the semi-trans state of TV can really hype up hyperactive kids.
Schedule "free time" each day to release his kinetic energy. Allow him to do run around, scream or do anything to his like to release his energy during this "free time" And set a specific time of the day to this free time and let him follow the rules. Make a chart and positively reward him everytime he follows the rule. Some tips to engage him would be buy a crafting book (Kumon's series of crafting books avauilable in Borders or books like that) and make a goal with him so he finishes one craft a day during the most hyper time of the day - say when you cook dinner.. Hope this helps.
Setting goals and rewarding the kid and setting routines and rules aklways works with my son and I anticipate the same from your beloved son too. Keep in touch. Good to know you.
    Love,
    Thenu

    Hi Thenu,
Thanks for your response. I used to look at pictures and sketch them in a book, before marraige.
The book must be in India, at my mother's place.
I just didn't develop the talent, now also I can look at pictures and draw them, but cannot draw from my immagination.
One more thing today I and my kid made a new game board, its called
Multiplication Elephant. I drew an elephant picture and asked my son to colour it and made it as a game board. Was inspired from your game boards.I should thank you for it.
He is learning his 6 times table, with that. He felt very happy doing it.
Regarding the hyperactive behaviour, I have also heard about that colours and sugar in food makes them hyper active, so I mostly avoid giving him chocolates and colours in food like cereal.
We had a timetable sometime back, we followed it for a week, then stopped, I don't know why.
Maybe I should be a little strict myself and try to follow it regularly.
I have also planned to take him to the park every evening, as you said he can release some of his energy, by playing around.
Thanks for your tips, hope I would follow the time table along with my kid.
    Take care

  5. Regarding your drawing - that sounds like me. :) I also am confortable drawing by looking at pics but not from imagination. Same way didnt develop it further.
Interesting to know abt the multiplication game. Post the idea in detail so we could also play. :) I am also instilling the idea of multiplication to my kid. He seems to have gotten the hang of it. I am very wary that he must understand the concept behind than memorising the tables. Playing games is a good way to go teach the concepts. Glad I have a companion like you.

    Hi Thenu,
I taught my son the concept of multiplication by doing skip counting.I think skip counting by 2,3,4,5,6 is the starting for multiplication. For skip counting I used to give hime join the dots.

Once he knows this if you tell him the concept of multiplication, he would get it.
Then I think he has to remember by repeated learning (i.e) byhearting.

As my kid knows the concept, we just did the picture and drew boxes and I wrote (for eg 8*6) in each box and we had a start and finish. Each time a person lands on a box he or she has to tell the product, if its wrong lose a turn.
The person who gets to the finish first is the winner.
I don't have a blog, so I think I can't post it.I don't know whether there is any other way.Hope you understood what I have tried to tell.
    take care
